Denis Lapassion, born in Cayenne, French Guiana, is a French pianist. He is also a composer and arranger. His music is eclectic, and he expresses himself through a variety of styles: jazz, gospel, soul, funk, Caribbean, and South American music. His repertoire is based on a fusion of jazz and the rhythms of French Guiana and the Amazon, which he calls Afro-Amazonian jazz.
He began taking classical piano lessons at the age of 9, before performing negro spirituals and gospel within local groups. At the age of 16, he began studying jazz as a self-taught musician.
He studied musicology at the Sorbonne (Paris IV University), piano at the Rachmaninoff Russian Conservatory in Paris, and jazz at A.R.P.E.J. in Paris.
He became a professional musician in 1997 and has performed with numerous artists such as Ray Charles, Palata, the Golden Gate Quartet, Jo Ann Pickens, Dave Cowan, Gospel Chords, Gospel Voices, Anthony Bailey, Conti Bilong, Noël Ekwabi, Yela, Voices of New Orleans, Eric Bonheur, Jowee Omicil, Félix Sabal-Lecco, and Étienne Mbappé.
In 2009, he founded the Institute for Training in Musical Disciplines (IFDM) in French Guiana.
He performed with his album Sérénité at festivals such as the Kayenn Jazz Festival (French Guiana), Suriname Jazz Festival (Suriname), St. Lucia Jazz Festival (Saint Lucia), Amapá Jazz Festival (Brazil), the First Piano Gathering (Guadeloupe), Biguine Jazz Festival (Martinique), Piano Kon Sa Ka Ekri (Martinique), and PAP Jazz (Haiti).
