Born in 1978, Sonny Troupé grew up in a rich musical environment shaped by his father, saxophonist Georges Troupé. From an early age, he was exposed to a wide range of styles, including jazz, gwoka, classical music, salsa, and zouk. His first instrument was the ka drum, which he quickly approached with both traditional and modern techniques. At just six years old, he joined the group Kimból as a soloist, and by the age of eight, he had begun teaching himself drums and vibraphone. He continued his musical training in Guadeloupe with his father before moving to Toulouse in 1996, where he studied at the University of Mirail, the conservatory, and the Agostini drum school, earning an advanced diploma.

His career has been shaped by numerous collaborations and diverse projects blending jazz, funk, reggae, and experimental music. In 2010, he founded the Sonny Troupé Quartet, releasing the album Voyages et Rêves in 2013. His collaboration with pianist Grégory Privat led to a highly regarded duo and the album Luminescence (2015). He also toured internationally and recorded with singer Lisa Simone.

A highly active artist, Sonny has developed multiple projects, including Nouvo Lokans centered on gwoka, ExpéKa combining jazz and hip-hop, and collaborations with Sélène Saint-Aimé as well as collectives such as Black Lives. He is also involved in contemporary and electro-oriented creations.

Constantly seeking innovation, he has released several albums, including Reflets Denses (2017) and Evy Danse (2026). At the same time, he is deeply committed to education, regularly giving masterclasses around the world and promoting cultural transmission and the training of younger generations.
