Born in Martinique in December 1984, Grégory Privat grew up in a musical environment, influenced by his father, the pianist José Privat, a member of the group Malavoi. Introduced to the piano at an early age, he underwent a rigorous classical training for about ten years before turning to jazz and improvisation.
While studying engineering in Toulouse, he played at night in jazz clubs, gradually shaping his artistic identity. He later moved to Paris, where he met influential musicians such as Jacques Schwarz-Bart, Stéphane Belmondo, and Sonny Troupé, who would leave a lasting mark on his career. Eager to establish himself on the jazz scene, he took part in several prestigious competitions, including the Montreux Jazz Festival piano competition in 2008 and the Martial Solal Competition in 2010, where he reached the semi-finals.His first album, Ki Koté(2011), was warmly received. He confirmed his talent with Tales of Cyparis(2013), inspired by a survivor of the Mount Pelée eruption. Acclaimed by critics, the project positioned him among the rising figures of jazz. In 2015, Luminescence, a duo with Sonny Troupé, was nominated at the Victoires du Jazz.That same year, he joinedthe Liberetto quartet of bassist Lars Danielsson and signed with the ACT label, which released Family Tree(2016). Seeking independence, he later founded his own label, Buddham Jazz, and released Soley(2020).The following years marked a more intimate artistic direction, with Yonn(2022), his first solo album blending voice and piano, followed by Nuit & Jour(2023). In 2024, he released Phoenix, continuing his trio work. In 2025, he released 22, a duo album with Jacques Schwarz-Bart.A recognized artist, he has received several major distinctions, including the Django Reinhardt Prize (2024) and the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (2025).
